Day 03 - Rocklin to Plymouth

                                                          Fri  May 26, 2017

Our plans today were to ride only about 40 miles to a town called Plymouth in the Sierra foothills. We stopped for breakfast #2 (breakfast #1 was a quick oatmeal earlier) at a Subway after riding about 10 miles and made some calls about campsites.

Again today we met some riders from the Sacremento Wheelmen cycling club. They seem to be everywhere. Two of them helped us navigate the bike paths past Folsum Dam, which was roaring with water being released.

At a stop at the very small town of Latrobe (no services), I found on the side of the road a small palm sized stone with some strange writing on it (see photo). I considering keeping it, trying to determine if I wanted the extra weight, when Ian mentioned something about bad karma if I took it. I left it for someone else to find. I am curious what the writing says.

We made it to Plymouth by about 2pm, so we had a leisurely afternoon. We are camping on the Amador County Fairgrounds, the only camping site around.

Today we rode 40 miles at 12.8 mph average. 2500 ft of climbing, with some pretty steep sections. It was harder than yesterday's 75 miles.

Tomorrow is a shorter 30 miles, but with 4000 ft elevation gain, from 1000 ft here to 5000 ft at Cooks Station. Cooks Station is the highest open camping that we have been able to find due to the snow, which we actually haven't even seen yet. This climb will be a test of our legs vs the weight of the bikes and gear. The following day will be up and over Carson Pass.

There may not be any cell service at Cooks Station , so maybe no report tomorrow.
